Students at Bondi Public School in Sydney are helping to fight Australia’s growing obesity problem, through their successful participation in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.

Bondi Public was selected as the demonstration school to help establish the program and be a model for other participating schools in New South Wales. The school will act as a training centre for schools joining the program.

Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon today visited Bondi Public to open the kitchen garden and announce the second round of the $12.8 million program, which is being rolled out in up to 190 government schools nation-wide.

Each school receives up to $60,000 to help with the construction of infrastructure for the program, such as new kitchens and gardens.

The Minister was joined at the launch of the second funding round by the program’s founder and culinary legend, Stephanie Alexander, and renowned restaurateur and chef Kylie Kwong, in praising the children, teachers, volunteers and parents for their hard work establishing the program in 41 schools so far.

The Rudd Government today announced the next 47 primary schools successful in the second round of the program, which teaches children how to grow, prepare and share healthy food, to develop life-long healthy eating habits.

The Rudd Government is committed to tackling the challenge of increasing rates of childhood obesity, through instilling healthy lifestyle habits at an early age.

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program is just one of the many programs the Government supports to help address the issue of ever increasing rates of overweight Australians.

Developing healthy eating, a love of food and an understanding of growing and preparing food early in life, will give the next generation the skills necessary to help avoid lifestyle related chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.
