20 November 2009

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today officially opened the new national premises of Australia’s youth mental health foundation, headspace.

headspace was created to overcome the barriers that young people perceive in getting help for mental health issues from traditional medical services and now provides access to youth mental health services across 30 sites.

The official opening of the new national office comes soon after the adoption of a new governance structure for headspace and the signing of a new three year $45.2 million funding agreement with the Australian Government.

The national office allows for a coordinated approach across all 30 sites and the development of marketing and communication activities to promote youth mental health services.

Last financial year, headspace’s youth friendly services provided support to 14,000 young people across Australia, and approximately 95,000 occasions of service.

The Australian Government understands the importance of investing in youth mental health. One in four young Australians will suffer from mental illness in any one year, which is the highest prevalence of mental disorders in any age bracket.

Without early intervention, problems such as anxiety, depression and substance misuse can escalate and change a young person’s life course.

The National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission’s final report has identified the importance of the provision of youth friendly mental health services. The importance of youth mental health services has been a prominent issues raised at the more than 70 consultations on the report.
