Queensland dental patients will have access to a purpose-built, $104 million Oral Health Centre in Brisbane, funded by the Australian Government in the 2009-10 Budget.

Approximately 17,000 patients, including those requiring oral cancer outpatient care, special needs dentistry, speech pathology, dietetics and ear, nose and throat services will be treated annually at the centre.

The Oral Health Centre will combine research, education, training and specialist expertise in patient care with a particular emphasis on oral cancer diagnosis and treatment, and special needs dentistry.

The three-year construction of the centre is supported under the Government's nation-building Health and Hospitals Fund, which is building health infrastructure for the 21st century, while also creating employment opportunities.

The centre will include facilities for clinical dental education at under and postgraduate levels with 187 dental chairs across 11 clinics, covering general practice dentistry, oral rehabilitation, paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral radiology and oral medicine.

Expected to begin in late 2009, the project will provide jobs for the local building industry. It is expected to be completed by July 2010, and occupied by early 2012.
