Melbourne is set to become a centre of world-class neuroscience research with funding from the Rudd Government’s 2009-10 Budget.
The Rudd Government is allocating $39.8 million over three years to complete the construction and fit-out of the Melbourne Neuroscience Project. This world-class neuroscience research institute will undertake research on neurological diseases. Such diseases are of importance for Australia’s ageing population.
The funding is supported under the Government's nation-building Health and Hospitals Fund, which is building health infrastructure for the 21st century, while also creating employment opportunities.
The institute will bring together the resources of Victoria’s dispersed neuroscience efforts into a single collaborative project. This will exploit existing strengths and talents and capitalise on the momentum that has been created with the current neuroscience revolution.
It will help focus the neuroscience and mental health research agenda and strategy in Melbourne and Victoria and deliver world-class facilities attractive to international researchers.
Expected to begin in 2009 with construction due for completion by June 2012, the project will provide jobs in the local construction industry, as well as an increase in scientific and support staff.
