Australians will benefit from improved access to tissue transplants under funding in the 200910 Budget.
The Rudd Government is allocating $13 million over three years to build a state-of-the-art tissue banking facility for the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria to manage the higher rates of tissue donation. The existing donor tissue bank is obsolete.
This project is supported under the Government's nation-building Health and Hospitals Fund, which is building health infrastructure for the 21st century, while also creating employment opportunities.
The improved facilities will allow for greater retrieval, processing, storage and distribution of tissue for those Australians in need of life transforming transplantation.
The enhanced Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria will also play a pivotal role in translating successful research into biotechnology-enhanced transplantable products.
With the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria currently providing tissue to more than 170 hospitals throughout Australia, the benefits of the new facility will be felt nationally.
The immediate employment benefits will also be significant. The project will employ architects and health planners, cost managers, builders, engineers and surveyors.
Construction is expected to begin in March 2010 and be completed by September 2011.
