8 May 2009The Rudd Government has signed a funding agreement with General Practice South, which takes the $2.5 million Sorell GP Super Clinic one step closer to establishment.
The announcement follows on from community consultation conducted last year.
The funding will allow the Division of General Practice to support the Sorell Council, Sorell Family Practice and South Eastern Community Care over the coming months in developing the business and operational arrangements and the building design for the clinic.
The GP Super Clinic in Sorell is expected to provide high-quality integrated healthcare services to meet the local health needs and priorities, with a focus on accessible, multi-disciplinary care provided by teams of medical, nursing and allied health professionals.
Consultation with the local community will continue over the coming months to ensure the Sorell region has the right mix of health practitioners.
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, said the GP Super Clinics will play an important role in improving frontline health services in communities such as Sorrell.
“Sorell becomes the fifteenth GP Super Clinic contract to be signed with the Government,” Ms Roxon said.
Federal Member for Lyons, Dick Adams, said that he was very pleased to see a preferred provider appointed for the planned Sorell GP Super Clinic.
“The Sorell GP Super Clinic will be an important for this quickly growing area.
“The GP Super Clinic will give access to high quality integrated health services to many people from as far away as the Tasman Peninsular, many of these people currently have to travel to Hobart to access these medical services.
“This is an important piece of community building infrastructure.
“This is an important step forward in the delivery of an election commitment from the Government, and I look forward to seeing the benefits this project will bring to the area in terms of jobs and better services for the area,” Mr Adams said.
GP Super Clinics are a $275 million commitment of the Rudd Government, providing primary health care services where and when they are needed.
They are a key part of the Government’s plans to improve Australia’s health care system.
