The Australian Government has signed an agreement with the Northern Territory Department of Health and Families to provide $10.0 million for the construction of the Palmerston GP Super Clinic in Darwin’s fast-growing satellite city.

As a result, the NT Government today called for tenders to build the new facility.

As a joint construction project the contract will also include development of a new federally funded Early Learning Integrated Child Care Centre (ELCC).

The Australian Government is providing $2.1 million to establish the Palmerston ELCC, due to be operational from 2010.

The new facility will provide residents of Palmerston with access to a range of primary health services, including community-based and outpatient services.

In the meantime, the NT Government will continue to offer Urgent After Hours GP services to the Palmerston community, which it introduced in December 2008 as Stage 1 of the GP Super Clinic. This service has already seen over 3700 patients.

The Palmerston GP Super Clinic will be located in the Palmerston Health Precinct on the corner of Temple Terrace and Roystonea Avenue.

The clinic will incorporate privately practising GPs, practice nurses, allied health professionals and medical specialists working in multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated care services to meet the health needs and priorities of the local community.

NT Health Minister Kon Vatskalis said the clinic will work closely with other health care practices in the area to help ensure the best possible support for the people of Palmerston and surrounding communities.
“The Palmerston GP Super Clinic is a significant priority for both the NT and Federal Government and the release of this construction tender is a sign that things are moving forward,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“We recognise that the fast growing Palmerston region requires investment in health and community services and that’s what this project delivers.”

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, said the Palmerston GP Super Clinic will play an important role in improving frontline health services for the Palmerston community.

Federal Member for Solomon, Damian Hale, welcomed today’s announcement, saying he was pleased to see the Palmerston GP Super Clinic taking another significant step forward.

“The residents of Palmerston will significantly benefit from this boost in local health services.

“I am delighted this contract has been signed and that a tender for construction of the GP Super Clinic has been announced,” Mr Hale said.

The GP Super Clinic program is a $275.0 million commitment of the Rudd Government focused on providing primary health care services when and where they are needed.

The GP Super Clinics are a key part of the Federal Labor Government’s plans to improve Australia’s health care system.
