9 April 2009The Rudd Government has signed a contract with Devonport GP Superclinic Pty Ltd for $5 million to establish the Devonport GP Super Clinic.
The GP Super Clinic will be a multi-site facility operating from 8 Wenvoe Street and 144A William Street in Devonport.
The Devonport GP Super Clinic will accommodate GPs, practice nurses, allied health professionals and medical specialists who will operate in multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated health care services — services which aim to meet the health needs and priorities of the local community.
The GP Super Clinic will provide new preventative care and chronic disease management services including a cardiac rehabilitation clinic, an osteoporosis clinic, additional services from psychologists, physiotherapists, dieticians and osteopaths.
These services are designed to support people in Devonport with mental health issues, diabetes, asthma, and musculoskeletal problems.
In fact, new services for asthma, diabetes and falls prevention are expected to commence within four weeks.
The Devonport GP Super Clinic will be open until 10:30 pm each night to provide after-hours service, easing the burden on the Emergency Department of the Mersey Community Hospital.
Bulk billing will also be available to pensioners, health care card holders, students and children under 16 years of age.
The clinic will work closely with other practices in the region to help ensure the best possible care for the people of Devonport and surrounding communities.
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, said GP Super Clinics will play an important role in improving frontline health services in communities like Devonport.
“Devonport becomes the tenth GP Super Clinic contract to be signed with the Government,” said Ms Roxon.
Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom welcomed the announcement today and said he was pleased that Devonport GP Superclinic Pty Ltd had agreed to be part of the Super Clinic.
“This facility will deliver real benefits for people living in the Braddon electorate by bringing together GPs and allied health workers under the one roof.
“I am pleased this contract has now been signed and we can get on with providing services to the local region,” Mr Sidebottom said.
GP Super Clinics are a $275 million commitment of the Rudd Government, providing primary health care services when and where they are needed.
They are a key part of the Government’s plans to improve Australia’s health care system.
