New centre for excellence in Aboriginal health to mark World Health Day

The Rudd Government will provide $2.5 million to establish a Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Aboriginal Health at the University of New South Wales.
The funding will help researchers to determine the incidence of HIV in Indigenous communities and investigate the best ways to identify and treat HIV and other blood borne and sexually transmitted diseases.
On this World Health Day, we are reminded of key public health issues that affect the international community – HIV is one of these.
HIV and other viral infections such as hepatitis B, herpes simplex and human papilloma virus cause infertility, illness and death in communities, not just around the world, but right here in Australia.
Developing a better understanding of when and how these infections develop in Aboriginal people has the potential to improve the health of Indigenous communities and assist in reducing the 17 year life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The grant, provided through the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), will enable researchers at the newly established Centre for Clinical Research Excellence to work with selected Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.
The studies of the Centre will also aim to solve some of the clinical and health service issues that Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services face on a daily basis – which can lead to better health outcomes for Indigenous communities.
Indigenous health service staff will be involved in the research and supported to improve their research skills, ensuring that people who work at grass roots level have the knowledge to contribute to the long term health of their communities.
Six Centres for Clinical Research Excellence have been funded through the NHMRC in 2009.
