Dr Carl-Magnus Larsson has been appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) from 22 March 2010.
In making the announcement today, the Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Mark Butler, thanked former CEO Dr John Loy and Mr Peter Burns, who has been acting in the role over the past year, for their contributions to the agency.
“As the CEO of ARPANSA, Dr Larsson will lead the Government agency responsible for protecting people and the environment from the harmful effects of both ionising and non-ionising radiation,” Mr Butler said.
Dr Larsson is a leading international authority on radiation safety and radioactive materials.
Currently serving as Director of Department of Radioactive Materials in the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, Dr Larsson has spent more than 15 years working in radiation regulation where he has gained extensive experience in safety practices including emergency preparedness, environmental surveillance and assessment, and medical radiation protection.
“Dr Larsson’s appointment will ensure that ARPANSA continues to have the confidence of both the community and industry in fulfilling its role in radiation protection and maintain its reputation of performing to the highest international standards,” Mr Butler said.
The CEO of ARPANSA is the statutory office holder responsible for administering the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act 1998.
