Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot today released the first annual Home and Community Care (HACC) Program report that showed more than 830,000 people across Australia received HACC services and eight million hours of domestic assistance were provided during 2007-08.

The 2007-08 Home and Community Care Program Annual Report is the first annual report in the program’s 24 year history.

Home and Community Care (HACC) is a joint Australian and state and territory government program that delivers affordable and accessible care to help meet the individual needs of older people, and their carers.

The Rudd Government recognise that older people want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible and with an ageing population this demand will continue to grow.

Minister Elliot said: “We are committed to building a sustainable and accessible aged care system that allows people to have a choice in the type of care they receive.

“Last year the Rudd Government provided $1.1 billion to HACC and $736 million to commonwealth operated community care services,” Minister Elliot said.

Services offered through HACC include help with household chores, home maintenance and modification, transport, meals, personal care and allied health and nursing care.

“People want to remain independent and in their own homes and communities for as long as they can.

“Home and Community Care services help many people stay at home rather than move prematurely into residential care,” Minister Elliot said.

The report presents performance information and statistics on the HACC Program from 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008.

Key HACC facts reported included:

  • 835,269 people accessed HACC Program services;
  • Services were provided by 3,300 different organisations;
  • $1.6 billion was provided from Australian Government and state and territory government contributions; and
  • Eight million hours of domestic assistance was provided through the program, supporting more than one-third of all clients.
