Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot today announced $8.6 million in funding for Coffs Harbour Base Hospital to purchase new surgical equipment and upgrade a key part of the emergency department to help relieve the pressure on public hospitals and reduce waiting times.
Minister Elliot visited Coffs Harbour Base Hospital to meet with local health professionals as part of the Government’s road-testing of the National Health and Hospital Reform Commission’s proposed reforms.
The funding boost provides:
- $8.2 million for an eight bed Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) under the Taking the Pressure Off Public Hospitals initiative; and
- $401,000 to purchase additional surgical equipment at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital, under Stage Two of the Elective Surgery program.
Minister Elliot said: “The new 24-hour Medical Assessment Unit will help take the pressure off Coffs Harbour Base Hospital’s emergency department by treating elderly patients and people with chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular conditions.
“The Rudd Government’s $8.2 million investment in the new unit will help reduce the amount of time that patients wait for treatment,” Minister Elliot said.
The new Medical Assessment Unit is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
This funding is part of the Rudd Government’s $750 million commitment to take pressure off our emergency departments, of which $248.6 million was provided for New South Wales.
The additional $401,000 for medical equipment will assist in reducing elective surgery waiting times.
“Targeting key pressure points in our health system, like emergency departments and elective surgery waiting times is a priority for the Rudd Government.” Minister Elliot said.
A further $220,000 in funding will also be allocated for trauma coordination across the Coffs Harbour, Tweed, Lismore, and Port Macquarie hospitals.
