More Community Aged Care Places for Gladstone

22 July 2009Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, and Member for Flynn, Chris Trevor MP, today announced an additional 10 community aged care packages worth more than $125,000 a year in total for the Nhulundu Wooribah Indigenous Health Organisation (Nhulundu) in Gladstone.
Community Aged Care Packages (CACPs) are an alternative to low level residential care and provide support services for older people with care needs in their homes.
Minister Elliot said: “As the service demands of older Australians change, so too must the mix of services provided through Australian Government funding.
“Older Australians have told the Government that they wish to remain independent, in their own homes and in their communities.
“Community care services help many people stay at home instead of moving prematurely into a residential aged care facility.
“The Rudd Government is committed to providing the type of care that people need, when they need it and in the form that they prefer,” Minister Elliot said.
Nhulundu focuses on providing culturally appropriate health and aged care services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. These 10 new places are in addition to the existing 27 already operational places and will increase the care services being provided by Nhulundu.
Member for Flynn, Chris Trevor, said: “This type of care provided by Nhulundu Wooribah allows older people in our community to enjoy greater independence and a better quality of life among family and friends.
“These packages are designed to meet the specific needs of the individual.
“Some of the services provided include personal care assistance, assistance with meals, domestic assistance, social support and transport to help the person shop or visit the doctor.
“We want to make sure that we have the right mix of services available here in Gladstone for our older residents who may need care but are not ready to leave their homes just yet,” Mr Trevor said.
