A new $18 million residential aged care centre in Drewvale will help meet the growing demand for aged care places on Brisbane’s southside, the Minister for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot said today.

Federal Member for Moreton, Mr Graham Perrett joined Mrs Elliot to inspect the Stretton Gardens Assisted Living Apartments.

More than 40 new permanent jobs were created with the opening of the facility and 200 people were employed during its construction.

Mrs Elliot said the facility – operated by Southern Cross Care (QLD) – included 25 high-care beds and 25 low-care beds – totalling 50 aged care places. Among the 50 places, there are 10 dementia specific beds.

“I congratulate the staff and volunteers for their ongoing hard work in the development and completion of this stage of such an important project,” Mrs Elliot said

“I also officially welcome all of the residents to their new home.

”We are working with the industry and providers like Southern Cross Care to respond to the challenges of Australia’s ageing population.”

Mr Perrett said the new buildings and interiors had been purpose-built with a large bedroom, resident private lounge areas with a garden view and Pay TV, internet and phone access.

“The increased capacity to provide these services will be a tremendous boost to the region,” he said.

The Rudd Government is planning for the future and expanding existing services in both residential and community care..

In addition to the high and low care accommodation a retirement village is also being constructed on the site.

Southern Cross Care (QLD) Inc is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation founded by the Catholic lay organisation, the Knights of the Southern Cross. It is a major aged care provider in the state, currently operating 10 residential facilities (including Stretton Gardens) and four Community Aged Care Package (CACP) services.

So far this financial year, Southern Cross Care (Qld) has received more than $14 million in funding for residential aged care and nearly $1 million for community aged care services.
