Minister for Ageing Mrs Justine Elliot today welcomed the Aged Care Association Australia’s CEO Rod Young’s endorsement of the plan to publish quality and compliance data on Australia’s 2,830 aged care homes online.

The publication of quality and compliance data website will come into effect on July 1.

Mr Young made the comments on Melbourne radio (3AW) during an interview with Mr Derryn Hinch. The interview was in response to an article published in today’s (6 April 2009) The Australian newspaper which quoted some members of the aged care industry opposing the publication of data on quality.

“I will continue to work with the aged care sector, staff, unions, families and residents,” Mrs Elliot said.

“We have a world class and world leading sector, but there is always scope for improvement.

“I have visited aged care homes in every State and Territory and have met committed and hard working staff, who are dedicated to the care and welfare of the nation’s 170,000 residents.

“I am pleased Mr Rod Young has taken a strong and principled stand,” Mrs Elliot said.

Mr Rod Young told Derryn Hinch on 3AW (Melbourne radio) at 4.05pm on April 6 that:

“I would like to just point out that what the minister is proposing; we are not opposed to.

We certainty want our consumers to be well informed about our industry and able to make informed decisions when you are selecting a nursing home for their future care.”

From July 1, the Australian Government would list State-by-State aged care homes which:

  • Have been the subject of an official sanction in the previous year;
  • Are currently the subject of an official sanction;
  • Have received a notice of non-compliance in the previous year; or
  • Is currently, the subject of a notice of non-compliance.
