18 November 2008

I am delighted to announce that Mr Bill Ferris AC will be appointed as Chair of the new Health and Hospitals Fund Advisory Board.

The Government is establishing the Health and Hospitals Fund to support strategic investments in health.

This is a key part of the Government’s reform agenda to equip Australia’s health and hospital system for the future.

Mr Ferris brings broad experience in industry, as well as knowledge of a wide range of areas. He is currently Chair of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and Executive Chairman of the CHAMP Private Equity Group. He is also a Director of the Garvan Research Foundation.

Mr Ferris holds an Honours degree in Economics from the University of Sydney and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School where he graduated as a Baker Scholar in 1970.

In 1985, Mr Ferris chaired the committee report to the Australian Government entitled "Lifting the Performance of Manufacturing and Services Exports". He was Chairman of the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) from 1988 until 1993. In 1990, Mr Ferris was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for his contribution to industry and the export sector, and in 2008 was made a Companion in the Order of Australia for his contribution to philanthropy and to the medical research sector and the private equity sector.

The Health and Hospitals Fund will be the single largest investment in health infrastructure ever made by an Australian Government.
