Senator McLucas welcomed the funding confirmation and said the grants would benefit local sports people and families alike. “Townsville and North Queenslanders are well known for their love of sport and recreational activities and we have a strong track record for producing many state and national sporting champions,” Senator McLucas said. “The sports field on Palm Island is a vital community asset and a meeting place for social and sporting events. The commitment of $200,000 will help to upgrade and improve the field. “Netball is a popular sport in the region and the installation of shade covers at the Townsville netball courts will provide protection from the tropical sun for families and spectators. “Upgrading the public announcement system will also help the Townsville and District Junior Rugby League Club, which is a well know development centre for junior players feeding into representative level football.” Media contact: Greg Doolan (Kate Ellis MP) – 0433 345 323 Mark Davis (Senator Jan McLucas) – 0417 684 096
