The Rudd Government today confirmed a $350,000 funding boost to upgrade local sport and recreation facilities in Townsville and Palm Island.

The Minister for Sport, Kate Ellis, and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing, Senator Jan McLucas, said the funding delivered on important election commitments to encourage greater participation in sports and recreation activities in the region.

“Participating in sports contributes to the good health and wellbeing of Australians of all ages. These grants will improve local facilities, making it easier for residents throughout the region to engage in sports and other physical activities,” Ms Ellis said.

The grants include:

  • $200,000 to upgrade the community sports field on Palm Island;
  • $100,000 for the installation of a shade cover for the Townsville City Netball Association; and
  • $50,000 to supply and install a PA system at the Townsville and District Junior Rugby League Club.

Senator McLucas welcomed the funding confirmation and said the grants would benefit local sports people and families alike.

“Townsville and North Queenslanders are well known for their love of sport and recreational activities and we have a strong track record for producing many state and national sporting champions,” Senator McLucas said.

“The sports field on Palm Island is a vital community asset and a meeting place for social and sporting events. The commitment of $200,000 will help to upgrade and improve the field.

“Netball is a popular sport in the region and the installation of shade covers at the Townsville netball courts will provide protection from the tropical sun for families and spectators.

“Upgrading the public announcement system will also help the Townsville and District Junior Rugby League Club, which is a well know development centre for junior players feeding into representative level football.”
