Statement on Ambassador for Ageing and related programs
On April 12, 2008, the Federal Government announced Australia’s first Ambassador for Ageing, Ms Noeline Brown as part of its national program and commitment to healthy and positive ageing.

On April 12, 2008, the Federal Government announced Australia’s first Ambassador for Ageing, Ms Noeline Brown as part of its national program and commitment to healthy and positive ageing. It was an election commitment made on August 22, 2007.
The Ambassador for Ageing has been welcomed by the National Seniors, Catholic Health and the Aged Care Association of Australia.
As part of the 2008/09 Federal Budget, the Government has committed $2 million over four years to this national positive ageing program.
This funding will cover the costs of communication activities designed to promote healthy and positive ageing, staff, travel, logistics as well as remuneration for the position.
Remuneration for the Ambassador for Ageing will be consistent with Remuneration Tribunal guidelines, including the fees specified in Remuneration Tribunal Determination 2007/10: Remuneration and Allowances for Holders of Part-Time Office, Clause 2.3.
(The honorarium represents a small percentage of the budget and is expected to be $54,000 a year.)
Ms Brown has been appointed for an initial term of three years. The program will be reviewed in its third year.
Ms Noeline Brown, who turns 70 this October is a national icon and is well known for her cultural work and speaking engagements. She is epitomises healthy and positive ageing.
Noeline Brown is a well loved Australia Day Ambassador and active in her community in her support for meals on wheels.
The Ambassador will:
- promote healthy, positive and active ageing messages within the community;
- lead promotional activities to ensure our communities value and respect older people; and
- explain Government programs and initiatives to the public.
Since her appointment, Ms Brown has promoted a number of health initiatives including free flu vaccinations for the elderly, Bowel cancer screening and water safety for older Australians. She has also conducted 27 media engagements promoting positive ageing.
The costs for the activities for Ambassador for Ageing this year were met from available resources. Provision has been made in the budget for the next three years.
