Aged care facilities in the Strathfield area have received a boost with the official opening today of a 46-place extension to Jesmond Aged Care by the Australian Government Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot.

The extension to Jesmond Aged Care will absorb 36 residents from the Wynleigh Nursing Home into a more modern facility, providing a total of 99 beds, 89 of which are for high-care residents.

“The extension also includes 10 new low care places. Funding for the new facility will increase to $4.8 million a year,” Mrs Elliot said.

In 1990, Jesmond became one of the first nursing homes in NSW to adopt the ‘cluster model’ of care for Australians from non-English speaking backgrounds, specifically targeting the Indian and Tamil speaking communities.

“There is a large Indian and Tamil community in the inner west area of Sydney and the local Tamil community actively contributes to the success of the Jesmond Aged Care service by visiting residents and providing valuable volunteer support,” Mrs Elliot said.

“The opening of the new wing adds to the services for older Australians in the inner west, which includes community aged care so that more frail, older people can stay living in the familiar surroundings of their own homes, while receiving good-quality, government-subsidised care.”

Mrs Elliot said changes to aged care funding introduced by the Rudd government last month meant an additional $1.13 billion would be invested over four years in the sector. This would encourage more infrastructure planning and development by the nation’s aged care providers.
