The University of Western Australia (UWA) is the first university in Australia to encourage students to help save lives by joining the Australian Organ Donor Register online.

The Minister for Aged Care and Minister for Indigenous Health, Ken Wyatt AM, MP, congratulated UWA on its great initiative and he hoped it would act as an example for other universities to follow.

Speaking at UWA, Mr Wyatt said: “The Australian Government welcomes UWA’s online donor registration initiative – an Australian first - as a great way to encourage students to save lives as an organ and tissue donor.

“Knowing that many young Australians are unaware of how to register, or why registration is so important, the UWA initiative represents a fantastic way to reach students.”

The UWA’s StudentConnect portal is the central online hub where students can access and manage university information including enrolment, update their contact information and access a range of online services.

Mr Wyatt said: “By highlighting the option of donor registration on the StudentConnect home page, it is hoped that students will be more likely to click and register while completing other online activity related to their studies.”

Research commissioned by the Organ and Tissue Authority found that although 87% of West Australians view donor registration as important, just 35% are registered donors. For those aged 18-24 years, the registration rate drops to only 5% having registered a donation decision.

Mr Wyatt said: ‘We know that registration makes a profound difference because nine in ten families agree to donations proceeding when their loved one is a registered donor. I encourage all students at the University of Western Australia and across the State to join the register online today - it takes minutes and can save lives.

“I also honour the 47 deceased organ donors and their families in Western Australia whose generosity enabled 139 people to receive a life-saving transplant. They inspire us all to take the time to register and discuss donation decisions.”

Australia’s donation and transplantation rates continue to increase with a record 1,447 Australians receiving a life-saving transplant thanks to the generosity of 503 deceased donors and their families.
