As the countdown to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) continues, the Turnbull Government is delighted to announce that nominations for baton bearers are now open.

GC2018 will be a celebration of sport, art and culture, showcasing the Gold Coast and Australia to the world.

The journey of the Queen’s Baton Relay leading into the Games is an international event symbolising the unity of the Commonwealth nations.

Queen Elizabeth II will launch the relay on Commonwealth Day, 13 March 2017.

The baton will travel from London through all Commonwealth nations and territories taking part in the Games, before arriving in Australia on Christmas Day this year.

GC2018 is looking for 3,800 people to carry the baton on its 100 day journey across Australia.

We encourage all Australians to consider the outstanding people they know and nominate someone to share the spirit of the “Friendly Games” as a baton bearer.

Those chosen will be Australians who have made a significant contribution to sport on or off the playing field, or to education, the arts, or their community. They may have achieved something outstanding in another area of life.

Nominees must also be at least 10 years old at the start of the relay and be Australian citizens or lawful residents for the Australian relay period (25 December 2017 to 4 April 2018).

Being a baton bearer is a unique honour and we encourage all Australians to embrace this event and demonstrate our pride as a nation in hosting the Games.

Nominations can be made online by visiting Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games website and close on 15 May 2017.

For information visit the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games website.
