Congratulations to our Australian Wallabies side on their efforts in claiming a silver medal at the rugby union World Cup.

You dreamed the dream on Rugby’s biggest stage; a great campaign and fight to the final.

What a year for trans-Tasman sport with Australia and New Zealand battling out the Cricket World Cup final, the Netball World Cup final and now the Rugby Union. We saw two great nations, two nations with a proud tradition of working together, who hosted the inaugural tournament in 1987, take the field 28 years later and put on a final to remember.

While the Wallabies didn’t claim the ultimate prize their display of skill, sportsmanship and desire throughout the tournament is something we can all be proud. Congratulations to the Richie McCaw and the New Zealand All Blacks, not only on their win but on becoming the first team to retain the Webb Ellis Cup.

I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Captain Stephen Moore and Coach Michael Cheika – as well as every player and support person who proudly represented the Wallabies this World Cup. I also congratulate Player of the Tournament David Pocock.

Australians love sport and this is an important opportunity to inspire Australians to use the success of our rugby players, to take up sport and get active on the field. Sport is a defining characteristic of our national culture — one that is recognised across the world. In sport, Australia’s diverse population discovers a shared identity.
