It is with great sadness that I recognise the passing of Mr Alastair Lucas AO.

Alastair made an incredible contribution to the Australian health and medical research sector where he was Chairman of the Burnet Institute from 2002-2014 and Director of Research Australia from 2012-2014.

Alastair’s leadership will be sorely missed by the health and medical research sector.

Alastair was the founding Chairman of the Medical Research Future Fund Action Group and his sad passing reconfirms the importance of the establishment of the Fund as we look to find cures and treatments currently unavailable.

Alastair recognised the importance the Medical Research Future Fund would play in the future in being able to impact on all Australians.

Even after his own diagnosis he did not rest on his laurels and contributed his valuable time to assist in the establishment of the Medical Research Future Fund.

His contribution to the health and medical research sector was a significant one and his passion to improving people’s lives was clearly evident.

I extend my condolences to Alastair’s family.
