Friday is the last day for primary schools across the country to benefit from the first funding round of the Abbott Government’s $100 million Sporting School’s programme.

Minister for Sport Sussan Ley today urged primary schools across the country to use the last hours of the first funding round of the Sporting Schools programme to register and apply for funding for terms three and four.

Ms Ley said that nation-wide more than 3,300 schools had already registered for the before, during and after school hours programme and Friday, 26 June was the last day to register and apply.

Sporting Schools is a key part of the Abbott Government’s plan to encourage children right across Australia to develop healthy and active lifestyles early in life,” Ms Ley said.

“This programme is particularly important considering one-in-four children are now overweight or obese.

“We want more schools to register to be involved with Australia’s largest school-based sporting programme. It’s not too late - so if you haven’t registered, get on board.”

Ms Ley said approximately three quarters of children spend their spare time watching television, only one third of children are managing the recommended hour of physical activity a day and only half are involved in sport.

“Sporting Schools is designed to deliver sports in line with local schools’ needs and ultimately to get the children of Australia active, engaged and having fun through sport, more often,” Ms Ley said.

“This investment will help bring schools and national sporting organisations together to provide a supportive environment that encourages participation for more than 850,000 Australian children.”

The programme aims to include 5,700 schools to be funded through Sporting Schools for the practical delivery of sports activities that suit their local needs.

The Sporting Schools programme will include more than 30 sports starting in July 2015.
