Australia has a proud tradition of hosting world class international sporting events and this Asian Cup 2015 has again showcased our country’s sporting excellence.

I would like to congratulate the organisers, the Australian public, those who visited our country and all of the players, officials and volunteers on a successful and historic month for Australian football.

I particularly congratulate the Socceroos on their momentous win last night as well as South Korea and all of the teams for their skill and sportsmanship throughout this Asian Cup.

The atmosphere and quality of football at Stadium Australia last night provided an exciting finale, capping off a successful tournament where Australia again shone on the world stage.

More than 40,000 international visitors have come to Australia to be a part of the event, which has provided benefits across hospitality, accommodation, transport, retail and leisure sectors.

The national teams of six out of ten of our major trading partners participated in the Cup providing a great opportunity to develop business relationships during this important event.

To Frank Lowy AC, Ange Postecoglou, Mile Jedinak and the entire Socceroos side, this victory is one of the most famous in our country’s football history and all of the nation is proud of you.
