The Minister for Sport, Peter Dutton, has extended his and the Government’s deepest sympathies to the family of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes following his tragic passing today.

“The nation is mourning the death of a young man who excelled in our national game and had so much ahead of him,” Mr Dutton said.

“Words can do little to lessen the pain his family and friends are going through at this tragic time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as we all unite to reflect on Phillip’s achievements and the indelible mark he made on all those whose lives he touched.

“Our deepest sympathies also go to Phillip’s Australian, state and club team mates and the entire cricket family.

“I would also like to acknowledge the impact of this tragedy on Sean Abbott, another young cricketer who we all feel for in this difficult time.

“The past few days have shown how many people around the world respected and cherished Phillip both as a cricketer and as a person.

“Australian sport has a lost a bright star, but in Phillip Hughes, Australia has lost a much loved young man who will not be forgotten.
