The Logan community will have access to better and expanded hospital care and support closer to home through a $188 million redevelopment of the Logan Hospital.
The Federal Member for Forde, Bert van Manen MP today represented the Federal Minister for Health Peter Dutton to open stage one of the redevelopment.
The redevelopment includes a new 24-bed rehabilitation ward, an expanded children’s health unit, a larger emergency department and a new car park.
“The undercover car park will provide improved access for staff, patients and visitors, delivering modern, secure and integrated parking infrastructure where it is needed most,” Mr van Manen said.
“This significant investment in the Logan Hospital redevelopment will provide our community with better care and support, and expanded care options that are closer to home.”
The redevelopment is in two stages. The first stage includes:
- an expanded emergency department with 30 additional treatment space and eight paediatric short-stay beds,
- a children’s health unit with 14 additional beds and six outpatient rooms,
- a new rehabilitation unit with 24 new subacute beds, day therapy and gym, and
- increased car parking.
“The Australian Government is committed to supporting our health system to meet current and future challenges, through strong public hospitals,” Mr Dutton said.
“Stage two involves a 23-hour ward with 12 inpatient beds, and day surgery area including operating theatre and a cardiac catheter laboratory.
“Under this redevelopment, the health, function and quality of life for people who are recovering from illness or injury will be improved.
“A dedicated children’s health unit will enable children to be treated in a more appropriate setting, with the special needs of children and their families being taken into consideration.
“A larger emergency department will allow for more patients to be treated within the clinically recommended time. They’ll be received, triaged, stabilised and provided emergency care with a wide variety of critical, urgent and semi urgent conditions.”
Once constructed, the new cardiac catheter laboratory will enable patients from Logan and Beaudesert to receive cardiac services locally rather than having to travel to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Logan Hospital provides acute medical, surgical, rehabilitation, maternity and other specialty services for children and adults. Logan Hospital services a generally younger population, with culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds.
