The Minister for Sport Peter Dutton today congratulated the Australian team on their performances in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Mr Dutton said the team had finished the Games strongly winning two bronze medals in the final days of competition.

“The team also competed valiantly against misfortune through a number of near misses and two athletes who were unable to compete due to injury,” Mr Dutton said.

“I would like to congratulate Toby Kane (Men’s Super- Combined) and Jessica Gallagher with guide Christian Geiger (Women’s Giant Slalom) on their bronze medal achievements.

“Jessica is the first female skier to win a Giant Slalom medal for Australia at the Paralympics.

The Minister said it was also inspiring to see 14-year-old snowboarder Ben Tudhope become Australia’s youngest flag bearer for a winter or summer Paralympic Games when he lead the team out in the closing ceremony.

“Ben had a top 10 finish in a field of 33 athletes in the men’s snowboard cross. This is a fantastic achievement for such a young competitor with a very bright future.

“I also congratulate alpine skier Toby Kane for being presented with the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award at the closing ceremony for being the athlete who best exemplified the Paralympic spirit.

“The way in which our athletes have competed in Sochi is a credit to themselves and the work of the Australian Paralympic Committee.

“It is all the more commendable given they competed under the shadow of the loss of friend and fellow athlete Matthew Robinson who was fatally injured during the Para Snowboard World Cup finals in Spain and who was recognised by his fellow athletes during the Games.”

The Federal Government has allocated $550,000 to the Australian Paralympic Committee to support its Winter Paralympics program in 2013-14.
