Federal Health Minister Peter Dutton today welcomed the NT Government’s release of the scoping study for Stage One of the Palmerston Hospital and the NT health capability framework.

Mr Dutton said it would allow the NT Government to proceed to market testing and an Expressions of Interest (EOI) process for a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to develop the hospital.

“The people of Darwin will see early works start on the Palmerston site by the end of this year,” Mr Dutton said.

Speaking in Darwin today, Mr Dutton reaffirmed the Australian Government’s commitment to increase funding for the new hospital.

The Commonwealth will contribute an extra $40 million to the $70 million already committed bringing total Federal funding to $110 million for the $150 million project.

“We want to see the Palmerston Hospital project proceed as soon as possible. This is an important project for the Territory.”

He said the larger 45 hectare site for the hospital decided upon by the current NT Government would ensure room for expansion to develop further health services as the population increased.

“The overall health of Territorians is below national expectations and further investing in better health services will help address this issue.

“This project will improve access to health services in Palmerston and surrounding suburbs of Darwin. It will also ease pressures on the emergency care department at Royal Darwin Hospital and help reduce emergency waiting times.

“It will help promote more efficient use of acute care resources across both sites.”

Mr Dutton today inspected work on the expansion of RDH’s emergency department that includes two more operating theatres and additional short stay beds with funding from the Australian Government.
