The Federal Minister for Sport, the Hon Peter Dutton, today welcomed the opening of the new National Cricket Centre in Brisbane that will offer training programs for a new generation of young Australian cricketers and ensure that player development is strongly integrated with sports science and medicine.

"The original concept was supported by the former Howard government and I am proud of the Commonwealth contribution of $17.5 million towards this project which will offer both young men and women training facilities and support Cricket Australia development programs," Mr Dutton said.

"The new centre will be home to a range of high performance training programs including from the Australian Institute of Sport, national specialist programs, Cricket Australia sport science and sport medicine programs, and camp-based programs for elite international and domestic players. It will also provide services to meet the needs of Australian teams, including our men’s and women’s national cricket teams.

“I am also pleased that the National Cricket Centre includes a multipurpose facility that is available to be booked by the public. The mix of high performance facilities to support our best athletes as well as providing access to the community is something to be proud of.

“It is pleasing that the partnership between the Federal Government and Cricket Australia has brought this great project to completion and it will become an integral part of future cricket success at all levels,” Mr Dutton said.

The joint multipurpose facility includes an indoor training centre, sports science and medicine facilities, and athlete recovery centre including lap pool, plunge pool and change rooms.
