Exercise Cumpston 06 has now concluded.

The exercise was designed to test Australia's readiness to address a potential pandemic outbreak. In particular, it tested the response of jurisdictions to pandemic flu cases and the management of notionally ill passengers arriving at Brisbane International Airport.

Exercise Cumpston has been a comprehensive test of Australia’s National Pandemic Plan. Although it showed that our systems and procedures are working effectively and efficiently, officials will now carefully study what happened to identify gaps and make improvements.

The exercise was closely observed and monitored by international health experts and will be critically assessed by them.

I thank everyone involved - some 1000 people - and assure Australians that the Government is doing all it can to address potential impacts of a pandemic influenza outbreak.
