Australian builders, designers and architects have been called upon to nominate for the Master Builders Australia 2006 National Lifestyle Housing for Seniors Award.
The Minister for Ageing, Senator Santo Santoro, said today that the various sectors of the construction industry played an important role in providing safe, comfortable and appropriate housing to meet the particular needs of older people.
"The Australian Government recognises that as people age their mobility can decrease and they are more likely to suffer chronic health problems," Senator Santoro said.
"Designing and building houses that take these factors into account must evolve as our society similarly evolves. As the number of people in Australia aged over 65 years increases, considerations of the design of the built environment become more important so that people can continue to play an active role in their community.
"Similarly, houses and other buildings designed without due consideration to the mobility and other needs of frail or older people can effectively act as a roadblock."
This is the sixth year the Department of Health and Ageing has sponsored the National Lifestyle Housing for Seniors Award; a joint project between the Australian Government and Master Builders Australia.
The award is one of several initiatives by the Australian Government that aim at building communities that support people as they age.
To nominate a project for a Master Builders Australia National Lifestyle Housing for Seniors Award, go to www.masterbuilders.com.au or phone Master Builders Australia on (02) 6202 8888. Nominations for this year’s Award close on 15 September 2006.
The winners of the Master Builders Australia awards will be announced at Parliament House on 10 November 2006.
