Walk to Work Day, October 7, aims to encourage people to try walking as a healthy alternative to driving to work.
Thirty minutes a day of regular physical activity for adults, such as walking 10 to 15 minute twice a day by parking further away from work, has been shown to have significant health benefits.
Physical activity can help treat and prevent high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes as well as improve mental health.
Coronary heart disease and stroke remain the leading causes of death in Australia. Prevention and control activities such as daily walking are vitally important.
Walk to Work Day is a good opportunity to reshape the normal routine and introduce activity into the trip to work.
I am pleased that the Australian Government is again sponsoring Walk to Work Day, now in its eighth year. It is also supported by the Heart Foundation, Diabetes Australia, the Cancer Council and beyondblue.
