A senior Australian who has provided aid to children in more than 30 international disaster areas has been named the 2006 West Australian Senior Australian of the Year.

Federal Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop today congratulated Father Brian Morrison for his selfless work in providing aid to children in disaster zones such as Chernobyl, Bangladeshi floods, Cambodian killing fields, Iraqi earthquakes, PNG tidal wave and the Balkans wars. He also worked in the wake of Darwin's Cyclone Tracy and provided aid for the victims of the Canberra bushfires.

"Father Morrison has contributed to the Australian community through his work in providing crisis care in areas ravaged by war, upheaval and displacement," Ms Bishop said.

"Father Morrison is an inspiration to all Australians, contributing his time and expertise to help people from around the world. He is an outstanding role model for all Australians and his work underlines the significant contributions being made by older Australians."

The Australian Government sponsors the Senior Australian of the Year Award to highlight the ongoing contributions Australians aged 60 and above continue to make through their work and their skills and by sharing their lifetimes of experience. Father Morrison’s story demonstrates how Australia’s ageing population presents many positive and inspiring opportunities for local communities and the nation.

"“The award is a recognition of the many older Australians who are helping to define us as a nation of people who care for each other; it is about celebrating the efforts of everyday Australians doing extraordinary things," Ms Bishop said.

The national Senior Australian of the Year, chosen from state and territory finalists, will be announced on Australia Day eve 2006.
