Joint Release

The Hon Julie Bishop MP
Australian Government
Minister for Ageing

The Hon Delia Lawrie MLA
Northern Territory
Minister for Family and Community Services

25 November 2005
JB175/05

Older people in the Northern Territory will be able to access 11,000 more transport trips, 10,800 extra meals and 2,000 extra hours of respite services, the Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop, and the Northern Territory Minister for Family and Community Services, Delia Lawrie, announced today.

Extra services will be provided to older people, those with a disability and their carers, through a boost of some $700,000 in funding for Home and Community Care services in the Northern Territory.

"The Northern Territory’s total Home and Community Care program funding for 2005-06 will rise to $8.65 million as a result," Ms Bishop said.

"This is an investment in people’s independence. Boosted funding means more people will be able to continue living in their own homes - as most people wish to do.

"Without Home and Community Care services such as respite care, domestic assistance, or transport services for frail and aged Australians, many people would need to move prematurely into residential care."

Ms Lawrie said last financial year over 4,300 people in the Northern Territory were assisted through the Home and Community Care program.

"This year’s increase in funding means many more people will be able to have access to these services," she said.

This financial year, more than $1.4 billion will be provided nationwide for the Home and Community Care program, with the Australian Government contributing almost $858 million.

"The growth in Home and Community Care funding ensures more frail aged people and younger people with disabilities will get support services to help them to continue living at home," Ms Bishop said.
