Thousands of older people and people with a disability in Tasmania will be able to access 13,100 extra hours of personal care, 12,200 hours of extra domestic assistance, and 12,800 extra hours of centre-based and in-home respite services, following a boost of almost $3.2 million in funding for Home and Community Care services in the state.
The extra funding was announced today by the Australian Government Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop, and the Tasmanian Minister for Health and Human Services, David Llewellyn.
"Tasmania’s total Home and Community Care program funding for 2005-06 will rise to $38.48 million as a result," Ms Bishop said.
"The program has been supporting older Australians, younger people with disabilities and their carers since 1985.
"The increase in funding will help more people maintain their independence by continuing to live within their community - as most people wish to do.
"Without Home and Community Care services such as respite care, domestic assistance, or transport services for frail and aged Australians, many people would need to move prematurely into residential aged care facilities," she said.
Mr Llewellyn said last financial year some 23,000 people in Tasmania were provided with assistance through the Home and Community Care Program.
"This increase in funding means more people will be able to have access to services," he said.
This financial year, if all state and territory governments agree to match the Australian Government’s offer of funding, more than $1.4 billion will be provided nationwide for the Home and Community Care Program - with the Australian Government contributing almost $858 million.
