Three local councils have been recognised for outstanding achievements in community services at the 2005 National Awards for Local Government, the Federal Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop said.
The Health Services and the Planning for an Ageing Community sections of the National Awards, sponsored by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, were awarded to the Rural City of Wangaratta (Vic), Hume City (Vic) and the Shire of Waroona (WA).
The Community Meals for Older Women - Adopt a Friend project in Wangaratta was the winner of the Planning for an Ageing Community award.
"This project has addressed a significant need in this regional community," Ms Bishop said.
"The project involves older women sharing a meal and being involved in exercise, education, social and community interaction.
"Through this program, many older women in the Wangaratta community have the opportunity to address issues affecting their health and wellbeing, leading to greater self-esteem and optimism."
Hume City Council’s child safety video and the Shire of Waroona’s Health and Community Resource Centre received awards in the Health Services category.
Hume Council’s DVD/Video provides advice to expectant parents on child safety in the home, including the purchase of nursery furniture and child car restraints. The Shire of Waroona has successfully developed a ‘one-stop shop’, providing health and community resources under one roof.
"As sponsor of these awards for the past three years, the Department of Health and Ageing is very proud to support the outstanding work of local governments," Ms Bishop said.
The National Awards for Local Government are administered by the Australian Government Department of Transport and Regional Services.
