Frail aged, people with a disability and their carers living in Lismore and surrounding areas will benefit from a joint Australian Government and New South Wales Government funding injection of $86,270 to the Lismore Meals on Wheels service.

The Federal Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop, and the NSW Minister for Ageing and Disability Services, John Della Bosca, announced the funds release today as part of ongoing funding from the Home and Community Care (HACC) program.

The HACC program is a joint Australian Government and state and territory government initiative that provides services such as delivered meals and respite care to the frail aged, people with a disability and their carers in their own homes.

"The funding provided today will enable the Lismore Meals on Wheels service to obtain new refrigeration and other equipment and continue to provide a reliable, high quality service to Lismore residents from a new site," Ms Bishop said.

"The new funding is on top of the $154,660 allocated to Lismore Meals on Wheels each year," she said.

"Home and Community Care helps frail and older New South Wales residents and people with a disability to maintain their independence and remain living in their own homes for as long as possible," Mr Della Bosca said.

"With total funding of $414 million for 2004-05, the HACC program has allocated more than $17 million for home-delivered meal services, such as Meals on Wheels around NSW," he said.

The Ministers said both the Australian Government and NSW Government were committed to ensuring the ongoing viability of the Home and Community Care service sector.
