Pathways Home - the road to recovery

The Commonwealth Government and the NSW Government have joined together to improve health care for people who are recovering after being in hospital.

New South Wales will receive $86 million under the Pathways Home initiative, which helps people to convalesce after a stay in hospital.

Under Pathways Home, a total of $253 million is available nationally, over 5 years, to the States and Territories to increase rehabilitation and stepdown services. These services reflect local needs and priorities with each State and Territory developing their own plans on how they will spend the funding.

About $13 million capital funding will be provided under the Program to establish 120 new beds under the Intermittent Care Pilots across New South Wales. The South-Western Sydney Area Health Service will receive $3.26 million to upgrade facilities in its area to accommodate 20 new places.

A purpose-built rehabilitation therapy hub will be constructed at the Mt Druitt Hospital at a cost of more than $3.5 million. In addition, 16 new villas will be built at Westmead and Mt Druitt hospitals to provide transitional care places, the estimated cost of the villas is just under $4 million.

The Nepean Hospital will receive just under $1.7 million to refurbish and extend the rehabilitation and geriatric service unit. The Kularoo Gardens in Forster will be given $400 000 for infrastructure enhancements.

"This is a good example of two levels of Government working together to improve patient care and assist patients in making a safe return home following an episode of acute care," Mr Iemma said.

"This funding for new and improved rehabilitation services will help make people's recovery more comfortable. We are pleased to be able to work with the NSW Government to improve patient care for people who have been hospitalised," Mr Abbott said.

Other hospitals that will benefit from the funding boost include Nepean Hospital, Woy Woy hospital, Concord, Liverpool, Royal North Shore, Prince of Wales, Balmain, Hornsby, Ryde, Bankstown, Berry, Cowra, Lithgow, Parkes and Forbes Hospitals.
