New funding and Multi-Purpose Service for older residents of Bombala

Older residents of Bombala are set to benefit from new funding to the Currawarna Home for the Aged and a new Multipurpose Service which will deliver high quality residential aged care in the region.

The Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop, and the Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, presented the owners of Currawarna, the Roman Catholic Church Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, with a cheque for $139,883 for building works.

"This funding, which represents $3,500 per resident of Currawarna, is part of more than $513 million allocated to aged care providers in a one-off payment to help them improve safety standards in aged care homes. The funding is part of the Australian Government's $2.2 billion record funding package, Investing in Australia's Aged Care: More Places, Better Care," Ms Bishop said.

"The Archdiocese will be able to use the funding to improve building standards and fire safety in the home, which will help ensure residents continue to receive high quality care in an appropriate and safe environment," Ms Bishop said.

"A further enhancement for aged care in the region is the endorsement of the Bombala Hospital as a Multipurpose Service, delivering 10 flexible high care places to older people."

Ms Bishop said Bombala MPS was granted 10 beds following Mr Nairn's representations demonstrating the need for 10 beds in Bombala MPS.

Mr Nairn said that he had worked closely with Bombala Council and the local community to secure the 10 beds.

"This means the hospital will be supported by both Australian and New South Wales Government funding to now provide 15 beds for older acute care patients and 10 aged care beds," he said.

"These new developments are great news for the community of Bombala - this new funding for the Currawarna Home for the Aged and the new Multipurpose Service will give a significant boost to aged care in Bombala," Mr Nairn said.
