Appointments to the board of the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency
The Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop, has announced two new appointments to the board of the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency.
Dr Michael Bollen AM is the principal of BMP Healthcare Consulting and has extensive experience in health care, including 25 years as a general practitioner. He has served on several boards and committees including the National Health and Medical Research Council.
Rhonda Parker, a former Minister in the Western Australian Parliament with responsibility for Seniors, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Positive Ageing Foundation of Australia and brings to the Board a wealth of experience in the aged care sector.
Ms Bishop also announced the reappointment of Board Chairman James Harrowell. Mr Harrowell has 27 years experience as a commercial lawyer and has been a member of the Board since 1999.
Ms Bishop thanked retiring director Henry Williams for his valuable and distinguished service since 1999.
Since the Agency was established as part of the Australian Government's 1997 reforms of the aged care sector, accreditation has delivered continuous improvement in quality residential care. More than 90 per cent of homes have received the full period of accreditation of three years, with some receiving commendable and merit awards for truly exceptional care and service.
In his recent and detailed Review of Pricing Arrangements in Residential Aged Care Professor Warren Hogan described the accreditation process as "providing a comprehensive regulatory framework for monitoring and consumer protection".
As part of its $2.2 billion Budget package, Investing in Australia's Aged Care: More Places, Better Care, the Australian Government will deliver an extra $36 million to enhance accreditation in residential aged care to provide older Australians and their families with the peace of mind that their aged care home will deliver the high quality care they need and deserve.
