Adelaide residents benefit from new facilities
Older Australians living in western metropolitan Adelaide and residents of the Marten Residential Care Centre will benefit from a $7 million extension and upgrade to the centre opened today by the Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop.
The centre, run by the Elderly Citizens Homes of South Australia, includes 59 high care beds and 36 low care beds.
The Minister recently announced an extra 10 high care places for the Centre, funded with $40,000 in Australian Government annual recurrent funding.
"This is a state-of-the-art facility for all residents and staff, and I congratulate Elderly Citizens Homes on achieving such a high standard of accommodation for older people in Adelaide," Ms Bishop said.
"This upgrade of high and low care areas includes 46 new rooms and the addition of ensuites to all rooms.
"It has increased the number and size of the dining and lounge rooms, and added new outdoor living areas and a coffee shop in the centre of the site - greatly adding to the quality of life for all residents."
Ms Bishop also welcomed the benefits for staff in the redevelopment.
"New nurses' stations have been built in each wing of the centre and high level IT infrastructure has been installed incorporating a new nurse call system, which will greatly add to the ability of staff to provide quality aged care to residents," she said.
Elderly Citizens Homes operates seven residential aged care facilities in South Australia and is investing $65 million to upgrade all of them. In 2002/03 the Australian Government provided the organisation with more than $19 million in recurrent funding.
An extra 10 high-care and 10 low-care places were also allocated to Elderly Citizens Homes' Charles Young Residential Care Centre in February.
