Rushing to find the perfect Christmas gift this weekend? Check out the huge range of sporting goods that will help keep you and your family physically active over the holiday break, the Federal Minister for Sport, Senator Bridget McKenzie, has advised.

“Sporting goods don’t need to be expensive – you can get a ball for around $5 and a family game of backyard cricket or handball after Christmas lunch is a great way to encourage loved ones of all ages to get outside and get active,” she said

“As the new Sports Minister I note that a new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) shows that small increases in our levels of physical activity could have major positive health impacts for the whole population,” Minister McKenzie said today.
“The Impact of physical inactivity as a risk factor for chronic conditions: Australian Burden of Disease Study found that 2.6% of the total disease burden in Australia was due to physical inactivity.
“The report suggests that the impact could be significantly reduced with just small changes to our levels of physical activity.
“This includes taking brisk walks and engaging in sporting activities, either structured events, or using the vast array of sporting goods available to play at home with family and friends.”

Minister McKenzie said evidence shows that an active, energetic life should start early so Christmas gifts that prompt children to get active every day is one of the best things parents can do for their children.
“Being active is good for our bodies and our minds — better health, better fitness and better moods help us all live our lives to the full.

“So take advantage of Christmas gift giving to encourage more physical activity for the better health of your family and friends and for the whole nation.

“I wish every Australian a safe, enjoyable and active Christmas season,” Minister McKenzie said.
