The results of an audit of Australia’s rural and regional health workforce were released on 30 April.

More Health Services For Indigenous Families

The Government today announced the first sites for its expansion of Indigenous child and maternal health services, as well as 30 new Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarships to help Indigenous health professionals studying child and maternal health. These initiatives form part of the Government’s $260 million Indigenous early childhood package.

Improving mental health services

The Australian Government has announced funding to improve the mental health workforce, by providing training to around 24,000 mental health professionals and encouraging mental health nurses to stay in the workforce. The announcement followed the Government’s release of the National Mental Health Report 2007, which underlined the need to do more in mental health.

$56 billion up in smoke, drink and drugs

The social costs of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drug abuse to Australian society have risen to $56.1 billion in 2004-05, according to a report commissioned by the Australian Government.

New health taskforce on prevention - tobacco, alcohol and obesity priorities

The Australian Government announced on 9 April the establishment of a new National Preventative Health Taskforce made up of health experts from around Australia. The taskforce will develop strategies to tackle the health challenges caused by tobacco, alcohol and obesity, as well as producing a National Preventative Health Strategy by June 2009.
