Strengthening guidelines for investigation of clinical issues in aged care - post-Broughton Hall

The Department of Health and Ageing will strengthen guidelines on how investigation staff respond to concerns about clinical care, including during serious disease outbreaks in nursing homes, the Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, announced today in response to a report into the April 2007 gastro-enteritis outbreak at Broughton Hall Nursing home in Melbourne.

In light of the South Australian Coroner's findings on 7 February on the actions of the approved provider at Brighton Aged Care, the Department of Health and Ageing is immediately demanding the provider show cause why its provider status should not be revoked.

Elliot says doctors with an interest in nursing homes should not sign death and cremation certificates of their residents

Australian state and territory laws should be changed to prohibit doctors who have financial interests in nursing homes from signing the death and cremation certificates of their own residents, the Minister for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot, said on 8 February.

New Bundanoon Service: Quality Care For Older People

High-quality residential aged care will be available to more people in the Bundanoon area with the completion of Warrigal Care’s new 90-bed home later this year. The Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, Elliot made the comments at the official opening of stage one of the project on 7 February.
