Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council
The ninth meeting of the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council was held in Sydney on 25 Ocotber, chaired by Christopher Pyne, Parliamentary Secretary to the Australian Government Minister for Health and Ageing. The Ministerial Council comprises Ministers responsible for food issues in Australia and New Zealand.

Government supports initiatives to reduce trans fats in food
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing, Christopher Pyne, announced on 24 October the establishment of a National Collaboration on Trans Fats that will propose initiatives aimed at reducing the amount of trans fatty acids in food sold in Australia.

Better access to mental health services
New Medicare items, available from 1 November this year, are a major step towards building a better mental health system. The items, part of the Government’s Better Access to Psychiatrists, Psychologists and General Practitioners through the Medicare Benefits Schedule initiative, will cost $538 million over five years.
