New drugs for macular degeneration listed on PBS

Lucentis® (ranibizumab) will be listed from 1 August on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for the treatment of wet, age-related macular degeneration. As part of the arrangements for the PBS listing of Lucentis®, Visudyne®, presently available under a Health Program Grant, will be transferred for listing on the PBS.

Crunch time comes for bowel cancer

The Australian Government has announced funding of $500,000 to help promote awareness of the prevention and early detection of bowel cancer. The announcement on 1 June marked the beginning of Bowel Cancer Awareness Week 2007, with the theme “Don’t die of embarrassment – talk to your doctor today”.

Researchers awarded Healthy Start to Life grants

The Australian Government has awarded more than $6.2 million to Australian researchers to investigate how environmental and hereditary factors affect the health of Australian children. Seven research projects will be funded through the National Health and Medical Research Council’s A Healthy Start to Life for All Australians Strategic Awards and focus on early detection and prevention of children’s health problems.
