Private health improvements

Significant decline in breast cancer mortality
Figures released on 18 April by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show that there has been a 26 per cent decrease in the mortality rate from breast cancer among women aged 50 to 69 years between 1990 and 2004.

Another boost for rural health education in Lismore
A new $1.1 million lecture theatre and administration building at the Northern Rivers University Department of Rural Health (NRUDRH) in Lismore opened on 16 April will help give about 400 students a year the opportunity to train in a rural setting while providing extra clinical services to the community.

More emergency medicine training for rural doctors
From 16 April, the Australian Government will increase training support in emergency medicine procedures for procedural GPs practising in the bush. The increased assistance will be available as part of the Training for Rural and Remote Procedural GPs Program, which supports rural and remote GPs doing procedural work that specialists carry out in urban areas.

The Australian Government will provide funding of $500,000 to the National Breast Cancer Centre for initiatives to help patients affected by lymphoedema after treatment.

New ADHD drug subsidised
A new drug for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will be listed from 1 July 2007 on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. The drug, Strattera® (atomoxetine), will provide treatment for children between the ages of six and 18 years who cannot take stimulants.

Start of cervical cancer vaccinations
The national program to vaccinate girls against cervical cancer began on 2 April in South Australia, with other states and territories to follow. Girls at Mount Carmel College in Rosewater were among the first in Australia to start their vaccination course under the National Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Program.
