National surveys of mental health and wellbeing

The first National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing was conducted in 1997 to gather baseline information on the prevalence of mental illness in the Australian population, the amount of associated disablement, and the use of health and other services by people with mental disorders or mental health problems. The first survey comprised three components: the general adult population survey of over 10,000, a survey of 4,500 children and adolescents, and a study of people living with psychotic illness.

The second National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing is being conducted in 2007, 10 years after the first survey. The survey will be in the field from August to December 2007, with approximately 11,000 16 to 85 year olds participating across Australia. It is anticipated that preliminary results will be available in late 2008.
