National mental health report 2010This report, the eleventh in the series, presents the latest data on progress made under the National Mental Health Strategy. The report provides a fifteen year view of trends and performance at the national and state and territory levels, over the period spanning the First, Second and Third National Mental Health Plans from 1993 to 2008. Extensive information is presented that describes changes in the resources and structure of mental health services in Australia since the commencement of the strategy. Your say on mental health—online submissions now closedSince the Hon Mark Butler MP was appointed as the first Commonwealth Minister for Mental Health in September 2010, the Minister has been committed to gaining a first hand understanding of the experiences faced by mental health consumers and carers. Minister Butler participated in fourteen consumer and carer forums hosted by the Mental Health Council of Australia during November and December 2010. Forums were held in each Capital City, as well as Mandurah (WA), Newcastle and Tamworth (NSW), Launceston (Tas), Cairns and Atherton (Qld). An online forum was held on Inspire Online. Comments sought through the Mental Health and Wellbeing website have now closed. Common themes reported by mental health consumers and carers included the need for better coordination between government and non government services, and better integration of health and social support services, including housing, health, income support, education and employment services. Many also reported ongoing stigma and discrimination. Through the forums, and an online submission process, the Minister has received valuable insight and feedback which will assist with informing the Australian Government's consideration of future mental health reform options. Further information regarding the Australian Government’s mental health reform efforts will continue to be available at www.mentalhealth.gov.au.
